xev log of the same input sequence

OK, I see where you are coming from.

I tested the same input sequence with xev, attached the output.
Sure enough, ALT_L involves FocusIn/FocusOut, wonder if that might have to do
with the ALT key being mapped to something in unity/compiz.

Will take a look at options etc.
