I can still confirm the exception with wine-git and wine-mono 6.2.0 on macOS. 

However, on Linux I can reproduce your results. To be able to make a new
project I had to use native d3dx9_43 and d3dcompiler_43, as mentioned in
Comment #3.

I agree we should resolve this bug. The d3d bugs are already covered in other
reports and I'm not sure what to do about the macOS-only issue.
