Well, when it comes to installing WMP9 on Win7 users dealt with it like this:

The first step of the video can probably be skipped, as wine will not throw
that error.. but the second part is basically using resourcehacker to remove
the error message from the wmp9 installer.

Not tested this, but just saying it does not really work in windows either.
