I've seen this a number of times and the problem has been that the game
requires an Options.ini to be found in the My Documents/Command\ and\ Conquer\
Generals\ Data/ folder.  At installation, a skeleton file is provided so the
game can start, and then after you configure, it will contain your new options.

At some recent point, Wine has updated its directory structure to rename the
`My Documents' folder to `Documents'.  An older installation of the game will
no longer find the required Options.ini.  If you symlink `My Documents' to
`Documents' in the drive_c/user area the game should launch.
