Direct Sound can use either the VxD HAL API driver or the winmm API driver
depending on what hardware you have available and will pick the HAL API
if it's supported.  You can set the HardwareAcceleration level to be Emulation

just like in real windows to force using the winmm API.  This is necessary
when
doing full duplex because hardware acceleration is not available yet for
capture.
Your hardware or software may just work better with the winmm driver.
