Don't forget the X11DRV settings, in particular:

Desktop
UseXVidMode/UseXRandR
XRender vs core fonts

are app-specific for sure, probably others. Of those you definately want
to be able to configure Desktop mode separately, at least until Alex's
desktop patch goes in.
