We may have a bug that is trashing the heap.  If this is the case, the
bug could be very hard to find because it may take time for the
corruption to show up.  A possible solution was mentioned by Eric
Pouech and Shachar Shemesh and that is to use valgrind to pinpoint the
faulty write operation:
