I think it was a joke. However there is nothing unnatural about white
noise there are many examples: waterfall, compressed air escaping, TV with
the aerial pulled out (not so natural) , etc.
I'm not sure this can or needs to be an effective test of the bit rate but
a guitar snip (acoustic) sounds like a good choice.
