There are applications that use two devices, even if they don't render
from both. Sins of a Solar Empire (the relatively new game on Steam) is
such a case. I also remember seeing this in ddraw, but I can't think
of any specific game right now.

My general impression of such applications is that they fail to
release the old device rather than deliberately use two different devices.
