Sure, renaming libraries or using static libraries are both an option. 
The hitch is that it seems Fedora doesn't really want us to do either of 
these. (Personally I don't either, because it makes development more 
annoying, for one reason or another.) Granted, that is only one 
distribution, though; I haven't yet sent mails to others.
