I think somehow the device initialization is very slow on this VM, and 
this new test makes it take even more time. Sometimes it passes, like here:

The test isn't doing anything on W7, as the device doesn't even appear 
as a dinput device there, so I guess we could instead bail out early of 
all tests.

I'll send a patch to do that later but I don't think it's worth 
re-sending this series just for that.
