Good question. I am pretty sure I had a good reason at some point, 
because I remember rewriting that a few times in order to find the right 
abstraction, but even in my queued patches minor_size() and major_size() 
are never called on vector types, so that could be removed now. I'll fix 
it in a follow up patch.
