RPC Merge (C_PL1)

This is about the last bit I can merge without messing with
the server.  This one went in a little weird, with a few warnings
and an unused function; perhaps there's some parts in the
original patches I don't have... if so, I'll find them eventually
when I do a final audit of the source patches.

From Jürgen Schmied's RPC patches.
Minor changes may exist between this and the original 
patch but it's intended to be basically the same stuff.
