WPP: Fixed 'out of tree' compilation

This patch fixes problem with 'out of tree' compilation reported
by Stefan Leichter. It adds the string duplicatins while setting in
structures. It also fixes the bug (AFAIK never reported, but present)
cousing a infinitiv loop and adds some small optimalizations.
