vcomp: single-threaded implementation of _vcomp_fork (try 6)

This draft:
- has comments that explain surprising details clearly
- uses C instead of assembly where possible
- uses untouched original assembly from typelib.c (minus a few bits)
- has stronger/simpler tests
- gets rid of unneeded prototypes
- shouldn't break build on arm
