It's probably a  font problem - I know, that's a lame
answer, but since it seems you did not get any before, that's
the best I can do :-)
Try to run with -debugmsg +font,+relay and try to find if
the app is asking for a font it does not find; if yes,  install it
from your Windows install  - or try to set up an alias. 
It's sketchy, yes, but fonts are not really something I
know well :-/
