help!

This is my first time using wine, so forgive me if I am asking a
question that's already been answered (although I DID search docs and
NG's first..)

EVERY time I run Wine (wine-only install, no MS_DOS partition), it goes
thru the "building font metrics" phase, which takes forever, but i've
seen 1 program run successfully, so something must be working..
When I try to run the setup for icq2000b, it goes thru all the fonts
twice before actually running, and then I get a message saying I need a
file called 50comupd.exe .. I downloaded that file, and have tried
putting it in "c:\", "c:\windows", and "c:\windows\system"
None of those locations seem to appease this darn thing.. Any ideas
there??

The thing about the fonts: how do I deal with that? I've read that it's
only supposed to do that once.. And here's what I get when it goes thru
twice:
