Cannot even compile Wine

You need bison, or byacc.  Mandrake 7.2 has an rpm for each.
I use bison, but AFAICS byacc would also work.  rm <wine>/config.cache
and start over from ./configure.

What do you mean, "compile Wine from binaries"???  Is that a mental
typo?

Oh, if you have installed the wine rpm, uninstall it before trying to
install a newer one you built yourself.  It will save you (and us) some
trouble if you do.
