Newbie: Getting CVS to work

I downloaded and unpacked the current WINE CVS .tar.bz2 from "Andis
Wine Files". Then I go into that directory and do the following:

zwei:/home/wine # export
CVSROOT=:pserver:cvs at rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de:/home/wine
zwei:/home/wine # cvs  login
(Logging in to cvs at rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de)
CVS password: cvs
zwei:/home/wine # cvs diff -u dlls/kernel/comm.c
cvs [server aborted]: no such directory `dlls/kernel'
cvs [diff aborted]: connect to localhost:2401 failed: Connection
refused
zwei:/home/wine #

I've looked in ./CVS/Root and changed it from localhost to
rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de, without any effect.
