I used -Pd, not because I'd seen the starter's manual, but as a matter of 
course from using cvs every day in my [last] job.  I still had directories 
with nothing in them but a zero-length Makefile.

Anyway, that's all done with, and it all compiled fine -- now I just have 
to get it working.....
