wine 20010824 and quake

i have quake v1.06 installed and running fine under windows. however,
running it in wine gives a bunch of errors. see below:

prophet% wine --winver win98 -- QLAUNCH.EXE QUAKEUDP.DLL QUAKE.EXE -mpath

prophet% wine --winver win31 QUAKE.EXE
wine: can't exec 'QUAKE.EXE': invalid exe file

oddly, MGenVxD.VXD is in C:\QUAKE_SW with the wine PATH set to look here as
well. from what i gather, quake.exe is a ms-dos executable, so how would you
execute that one ?

i'm a wine newbie, and yes, i have read the faq. anyone had success with
quake on wine over freebsd/kde ?
