Not true, you can access drives, and I believe serial ports (new to wine) 
indirectly.  As long a the host system has access.  Linux CAN talk to the 
scanner!  I can send data over the USB port, I'm just not talking it's 
language.  There must be a way to pipe I/O to and from the USB DEVICE 
DRIVER /dev/usb/scanner0 (not the actually usb port itself) to an 
application in wine.
