VirtualDJ : slow UI

I got VirtualDJ, a program for mixing mp3 (http://www.virtualdj.com) to
work after
much testing different configurations (use managed, double buffer, and
the oss sound driver). It works without sound skipping, but the UI is
very slow because it draws its own graphic widgets : top indicates 50%
of is spent in X and 30% in wine. 

Anyone experience a similar problem with another program and has some
advice to speed UI responsiveness ? (tried renicing X, it does not work)
