Quasi-success

Hello all.

I'd like to report near success with two games I've tested today. I used the
latest wine (20040408).

1°) Arcanum
-----------

I installed with wine; when I was prompted for the 2nd CD, I couldn't umount
the first; so I cancelled the installation (as far as I remember the files
were not erased; if they were I must have copied them somewhere before);
then I copied the files from the 2nd CD in the arcanum directory; I had to
apply a no-cd crack to go around the copy protection.

I then started the game; everything went fine (the movies played, I could
select a character to play - it's a RPG)

Sadly the game is unplayable because on the display it seems that graphics
are not updated correctly: tiles are shifted a few pixels randomly, so I
never really knew if my character was really standing where I thought he was.

However that's very close, and much better than with previous versions of
wine.

2°) Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor
-------------------------------------------

Another RPG, a bargain at 5 EUR !!

I installed with wine; the install was long (about 1h30min) but went well. I
applied the patch (it extracted an exe file to /tmp, and I had to launch
this exe with wine); then I used a no-cd crack (I had to do it under windows
since the crack programs didn't work with wine).

I then started the game; the movies played, but very slowly. I interrupted
them; the start menu showed up. However the mouse cursor moved rather slowly.

I picked up a team, and began the game; it was much faster than when I was
at the start menu !! (maybe because the game is in accelerated 3D, whereas
the menus are bitmaps). I noticed that every time I brought up a menu, the
game slowed.

Everything is going fine and fast, except... the characters don't show !!
What's strange is that I can see their skeletons (thin white lines looking
like a 3-year old drawing of a person), I can move them around or make them
act, but I don't see them.

Still not perfect, but a big improvement, as this game didn't even start
before; out of curiosity I tested it with winex-CVS, but I got an unhandled
exception before the game started; however the movies were much faster.

Hope this helps.
See you.
