[Wine]using winedbg

I've never used winedbg before. Is this the proper way to invoke it?
$ winedbg --gdb program.exe

I only get the following when the program crashes:

0000000a:0000000b: create process 'Y:\src\program.exe'/0x401b003c @00401250 (0<0>)
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0009), starting debugger...
Usage: winedbg [--auto] [--gdb] cmdline

and nothing actually happens, I have to Ctrl-C.

1) Is that the proper invocation? I tried both with and without --gdb
2) I'm using a Debian package, so is it probably broken?
