I'm no expert, but I've had better luck with older games by running Wine 
from the game's directory. In this case

cd /mnt/cdrom/xxxxx
wine -- name_of_game

I think that some games possibly look for parts of the game in ways that 
Wine may not resolve like DOS or Windows does. That's just a guess, but 
give it a try. It's free. ;-)
