[Wine] Black Screen under installed WINE

I'm getting this really weird problem.  I compiled wine and make installed. 
now, if I try to use any of the wine commands that opens a window, I get a black
screen that has to be alt-tabbed out of to get to the terminal to kill it.  It
works just fine if I use the built version that wasn't installed, aka, from the
source directory.  Anybody else getting this?
