What I do to recreate Windows application icons for use in those
programs I run under Wine is:
In windows, use an icon editor to open the program's .exe and locate
the icon resource (I use IconForge, there are many others that do the
same).
Use the icon editor to save the icon as a bitmap (in Windows icon
editors the choice here is usually .BMP)
Move the saved bitmap to Linux. The icon converted to a bitmap has
become 'flattened' (lost invisible surround if any) so needs further
editing at this point in Gimp to give it an 'Alpha Channel' and remove
the background.
Save edited bitmap as .PNG - Now use it as your icon for the app you
want to run under Wine.
