Only seeing this now.

Is your distro fully utf-8 compatible? Some basic programs (grep, ls,
etc) need patches which the maintainers were slow to adopt last time I
checked. I went to RHEL based distros (Centos, Scientific linux, settled
on fedora) for that reason.
