What graphics card and driver are you using?
That error shows up a few dozen times on google, too.
The only one that says anything helped agrees with
you that restarting X (e.g. by pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE)

I've opened a bug report for this,

It kind of looks like pglXQueryVersion is barfing; maybe we need to
add an exception handler around it.
If you can build Wine from source, try the patch I applied
there. It should switch off opengl support when it notices this problem.
