OK, when you installed Wine, did you install it from either Add/Remove or Synaptic? If so, you could try following the instructions at http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb to add the Wine repository (which will update you with the latest Wine release).

I don't know if it will make a difference, but it's worth a try.
