[Wine] Game shrinks virtual desktop

I like playing Panzer General 2. The problem I have is that it runs at 800x600, no option. If I play it without virtual desktop it takes over the whole desktop and I cannot do anything else, but play it. If I try play it on a virtual desktop, it then shrinks it down to a quarter of my desktop. My regular desktop is set at 1280x1024, the virtual desktop I set at 1100x900(approx), but instead of treating the virtual desktop a 'monitor' and repixelating itself within that size it takes the VD a shrinks it down to the size 800x600 which makes it way too small. I hope I explained what is happening clearly.
What I would like is have a VD that covers about 90% of my regular desktop and allows me to do other things at the same time, no matter what the 'screen size' a game or program calls for. Is that possible?
