Big thing here is chromium os is the core source code to the chrome os that is not released yet.   So you will still be able to interface with the chrome os online services threw chrome/chromium on windows linux mac .. .

chrome os is a web-browser platform.   No more and no less lockin than using the other online services to store data.   Most people don't watch the video carefully enough about the chrome presentation they insert a usb key part way through to upload data.  It appear the core OS is locked from alteration.  But you can still insert and get data from a USB key.   So maybe if sane ness exists be able to insert a usb key/drive into a chrome os device and download all your data off the online services if you don't trust them for backup.

Lets see how it plays out.
