I used it to install e-sword, which went fine but now I can't get e-sword to work. I can double-click the link on the desktop or i can single-click the link in the wine section in the applications menu, but nothing happens at all.

No. It will NOT work with the proprietary format for e-Sword. The two
are NOT compatible and Bibles available for e-Sword will not work under
GnomeSword.

GnomeSword is a Gnome compatible version of the Sword project. (Yes,
I've been at this for a while, about two years and more.)
