I think the problem has been solved. Was able to change the file's permission, and ownership by following the instructions located here: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2010/12/change-ownership-filesfolders-ubuntu-10-10-maverick-meerkat/ I am interested in the answers to the questions asked above.
