Thanks for the info. Looking at the long file, and particularly calls to ole32.dll and oleaut32.dll, I decided to

That made many of the spectacular app crashes go away. Unfortunately there are still some other ways in which the app is not working the way it is supposed to. I'll keep poking around, but I think I'm done with this.

If I want to go further, I may have to try to convince the vendor to release the VB source code, but I suspect that isn't going to be too likely.
