I noticed this thread hasn't been updated in almost a year but I'm experiencing a similar problem. I'm running wine on os x and my wine-gecko directories look like this:

Code:

The contents of the wine_gecko directory are the same (i wasn't sure if the "wine_gecko" folder that I unpacked from the .cab file was supposed to exist in the gecko/0.1.0 folder or not).

I also tried the winetricks method and it seemed to run without error, non-verbose output:

Code:
All done, no errors.

whenever I try to run iexplore from wine (ie, "wine iexplore http://winehq.prg" or any other url) it opens up the window for Internet Explorer but it only displays a solid white page and this is the output on the command-line:

Code:

fixme:ole:CoResumeClassObjects stub
fixme:urlmon:URLMoniker_BindToObject use running object table
fixme:shdocvw:BindStatusCallback_OnProgress status code 1

Which is some progress ;) because it used to display the message about not having wine_gecko installed. Does anybody have any ideas about how I can get this working?
Honestly, I don't really give a crap about web-browsing in wine, but I'm using Steam and steam seems to require wine_gecko to browse their store.

For what it's worth, this is the output on the cli when I try to run Steam:
