[Wine] hooking omnipage ocr software to scanner

today a techie friend helped me (from a remote location) download on crossover the omnipage 16 windows ocr software. 

for the upload of omnipage -- after crossover --, everything was working fine until it got to the point of connecting the scanner. 

no matter what we tried, could not connect. 

any suggestions? 

if this is the incorrect pace to post a question like this, i would appreciate some further directions
