This is one of the reasons I ended up going with Kubuntu, that and I dont care for the GNome desktop. I had the same problems as you with Ubuntu. PulseAudio is a mess IMO. 

I am new to Linux though, a more experienced user could have probably sorted my problems in Ubuntu out. But when I installed Kubuntu everything sound related worked. Hope you get it sorted out. Good luck.
