[Wine] Word freezes on startup

I have a portable version of MS Word that requires no installation.  It freezes on startup when I try to run it in Wine.  I have been trying for several hours to get this to work, and tried a bunch of different things I've found on the net, all of which either break my wine configuration, or fail to change the freeze situation.

Presumably the "safe mode" prompt is due to the crash I'm experiencing.  A slight square that looks like a startup window appears but just freezes.  Then I have to ctrl+c the process from the terminal window.

No, I don't want to use OpenOffice or LibreOffice.
