The problem is now solved. I formatted the partition and installed fresh (again). I reinstalled Wine 1.2 and Winetricks and used the latter to install Internet Explorer 8 instead of the method I'd been using previously. I then installed the game from the disk. It all works fine now. Thank you for your help.
