Update for PulseAudio users: many of the problems with PA and Wine have been caused by bugs in PA and/or alsa-plugin. Some of these bugs have been fixed in the latest versions of PA (1.1) and Alsa (1.0.25). If you are using older versions of those packages, upgrade.

Note that the need to restart the PA server sometimes is a bug in PA, not Wine: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46296
