"cannot connect"?

i just installed the wine-20040408.gz binary on freebsd4.9,
and all went ok, until i tried to run it (same error as
below).  i uninstalled my linux_base-7.1_5, and installed
linux_base-8 (was having problems with wine-20030813 on
linux_base-7)...  as the user, i setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/usr/compat/linux/lib (otherwise it complains about
libgcc_s.so.1, etc...)  i run wine, and it returns "wine: a
wine server seems to be running, but i cannot connect to it.
 You probably need to kill that process (it might be pid
51212)."  so i kill 51212, and try wine again, same message
with 51215, again and its 51218, so now i'm typing this... 
has anyone seen this before?  help...
