Now thanks to various hints, I've played a bit with the win98se and/or
winxp versions of freecell and cards, and, for those interested, that's
what I get:

a)	both from win98se: no joy
a')	freecell from win98se, cards loaded builtin: no joy
a'')	both from win98se, cards.dll.so REMOVED: ok
b)	both from winxp (cards loaded native): ok
c)	freecell from winxp, cards loaded builtin: ok

So, now c) is my standard - no native dll, no dlloverrides ...

BTW, solitaire (sol.exe from win98se) runs without cards
(WINEDEBUG=+loaddll wine sol doesn't show any cards.dll loaded)
