Sometimes this is the only way.  By the time you've reached this point though, your nerves are usually fried from the stress of trying to just make the dang thing work that it's best to set the thing aside for the day and do something else.  Take a walk, go workout at the gym even if it's 2am in the morning (go to one of those 24 hr fitness (http://24hrfitnessexposed.com/) places and ask for a free pass) and drink a lot of water.  

Get some sleep and sometimes (just sometimes mind you) you end up solving the problem while you snooze and wake up ready to fix it.  Then you don't have to tear the guts out and start over.
