Reading is situated
approximately 40 miles (65km) west of London. It can be easily reached road,
train and air. There are three international airports in the vicinity and
one international rail terminal:
Heathrow Airport —
you can continue on to Reading via a 45-minute coach ride (known as
Railair, see below).
Gatwick Airport —
you can continue on to Reading by catching an hourly direct train that
takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Stansted Airport —
you can get to Reading by taking the train into London, changing to the
Underground and then taking the train again to Reading. This will take
around 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Waterloo Station — Eurostar
connections from western Europe to London.
With these airports you should have a wide choice of airlines to fly with
depending on your quality and travelling preferences.
You will want to take the number 18 or 19 bus to get to the
university from Reading station. Click here for the
timetable.
You should get off at the St Joseph's Convent bus stop, as this
is the nearest to Windsor Hall.
Taxi — around £5 - £10 from Reading Station to the
Univeristy of Reading.
Road — Reading is situated next to the M4, junction 11. See the
AA route planner
for more details.
Accommodation
University Accommodation
We have a limited number of reasonably priced rooms available at the
university which will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis until
there are no free rooms left. After that you will have to make your own
arrangements for staying in a local hotel and arrangements for traveling to the
university each morning. Note that responders to the April survey who requested
rooms will prioritised in the allocation of rooms.
Due to restrictions placed on us by the University of Reading everyone requesting
a room at the university will have to pay for it by 12th August
2006 and no refunds will be possible once you have been allocated a room.
Also, due to tax reasons the only method of payment is to
PayPal $75 US per night to the Wine fund using the button below. In your
donation message, you need to indicate which nights you're staying, your name,
a contact phone number and an email address.
Rooms at the university include breakfast. See
here
for more information on rooms in Windsor Hall.
Other Accommodation
See this page
for information on hotels in the area (the first four are the best in terms of
closeness to the university).
The University
The lecture theatre we will be using and the accommodation are both located
on the main Whiteknights campus of the University of Reading. The conference
itself will be taking place in building 59 in the Nike Lecture Theatre. The
accommodation arranged through the university is in Windsor Hall. You can find
both on this campus map
(warning: 1.29 MB download).
Tips From a Local
The cheapest airport to fly into from Europe is Stansted since this is where
a lot of the budget airlines are based. However, it is also the most difficult
to get to Reading from since it involves getting the Underground to travel
across London.
Gatwick and Heathrow are roughly the same cost to fly into and both are
relatively easy to get to Reading from.
