oblivion.ini, but that doesn't work for me.
-some mention trying older versions of wine engine, but that doesn't seem to
help my case either.

But confirmed in all Wine engines after 1.6, including 1.6.2.

Issue seems to be fixed as of 1.7.36. Can no longer reproduce the distorted
sounds. Haven't tried earlier engines or the latest 1.7.39 engine.

I just tried with 1.7.50
The Game lags extremely whith sound enabled in Oblivion.ini.
When started from a console I get the the following error Message frequently:
ALSA lib pcm.c:7905:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred
I already tried with a minimalistic alsa config and all other possibly sound
producing applications killed.
There is no pulseaudio involved on my system (Arch linux x86_64)
relevant environment variables:
WINEARCH=win32
WINEPREFIX=~/oblivion
when I disable sound in Oblivion.ini, the Games runs smoothly with all eye
candy enabled to the max in 1600x900.
