I just ran the demo myself on a fresh wine directory and it crashes like the
retail version in both direct3d and opengl. Maybe it's not crashing for you due
to the newer beta driver you're using. My current setup:

Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.27
Geforce 7800 GS nvidia driver version 177.82
x.org 7.4
