what's the point of this discussion now?

I don't see the need of introducing some start.exe /unix hack. It's
ShellExecute() that needs to be fixed to match Windows behaviour.

For the time being, the versions of the game that depend on trailing space can
be started anyway from console or shortcut by adding a single "" (empty quotes)
parameter to command line.
Just add a hint to appdb and all is fine.
