While it's possible this is something completely unrelated, this bug looks
similar enough to e.g. bug 30545 and a couple of other similar bugs that my
guess would be that your libtxc_dxtn simply isn't getting picked up correctly,
or something along those lines. Perhaps you can check /proc/<pid>/maps to see
if it actually gets loaded at all.

While trying a different driver is good in principle to see if it makes a
difference, installing fglrx generally doesn't make things better, and you have
to be somewhat careful not to leave parts behind when uninstalling it again.
